May Day
So I skipped a few months.
Today is May day. And I forgot about the flowers. Called LA sis to ask her not to remind mom, but I was too late and she and the girls already called this morning! Damn her. she's one the to blame for all this. It's usually her job but since she's left for the bright lights in the big city, the job has fallen to me. What job you may ask? the tradition of leaving flowers on the doorstep for mom on May 1st.
"May Day is celebrated on May 1st. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These baskets are small and usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. When you ring the bell, you are supposed to run away. The person receiving the basket would try to catch the person running away. If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged."
this tradition started while me and LA sis were in elementary school. And she more than me kept the tradition going strong.
Last night I remembered May 1st, but didn't get out of my house into the cold cold (unusally cold)night to go put them on the doorstep. "i'll remembe tomorrow, I said to myself" yeah right.
I called dear hubby and said "whatever you do, please please call me when you get out of work" why he asks, because I tell him its May Day.
"what the fuck is that? you and your family's made up traditions"....i said it's not made up...see above.
"where am i supposed to get flowers?"
-go pull them off someones yeard, (that we know of course, no strangers). we used to do it as kids and we still do it to this day. no store bought flowers for us, we actually just go pull a flower or rose off a bush...sssshhh don't tell anyone.
He just called and told me his day for the last 45 minutes.
"babe....i went looking for stupid flowers but I can't find any. I went by Jess's, then to Josephs, Alfreds, and finally tony's but no one has any flowers."
so what does my hubby do? he sees an old man watering his lawn and pulls up next to him and asks "sir, would you mind if i took one of your rosebuds?" the man was polite and said "so you just wanted to stop and finally smell the roses, huh?" hubby started laughing and explained the whole May day tradition (which this little ol man had never heard of it either, what is it with some people!!) the man laughed again and said go ahead. as he got into the car, the little ol man said he was thinking that "he was that way" until he mentioned that it's for wife and his mother in law. hubby got a good chuckle out of that one.
Happy May Day!!
